Why Vancouver's Climate Is Hard on Paint

The Lower Mainland gets significant rainfall between October and May. Moisture is the primary cause of exterior paint failure — it gets behind the film through cracks, poorly sealed joints, and areas where prep was skipped.

Common failure points:

• Window and door caulking that wasn't replaced before painting
• Bare wood that wasn't properly primed
• Areas where two surfaces meet (trim to siding, soffits to fascia)
• North-facing walls that stay damp longer

What Extends Paint Life

1. Thorough prep. Pressure washing, scraping loose paint, sanding edges, and replacing caulking before painting is the single biggest factor in how long the job lasts.

2. Primer. Bare wood and surfaces with adhesion issues need a bonding primer. Skipping primer to save cost is the most common cause of early failure.

3. Premium topcoat. Exterior paints formulated for damp climates — like Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior or Sherwin-Williams Emerald — contain mildewcides and flexible binders that resist cracking as wood expands and contracts.

4. Two coats. One coat on bare or repainted surfaces rarely provides adequate film thickness. Two full coats is the minimum for lasting coverage.

5. Timing. Paint applied in cold or wet conditions doesn't cure correctly. In Vancouver, May through September is the reliable window for exterior painting.
